Ways that Google detects Invalid clicks

We always hear that Google has a sophisticated system to detect the invalid clicks, and result in termination of the cheaters' account. But, how can Google do that? In this post, I summarize those ways that Google depends on to detect whether the clicks on your site are invalid or not. Google will not first ban your account immediately. Rather, they will first flag your account and Google will keep a closer eye to your account. In some occasion, they may send you a warning letter to notify your situation; but sometimes not.

1. IP Address

It is the easiest and must be recognized by everyone. If those clicks on your ads are originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.

2. Click Through Rate (CTR)

Normally, Click thru Rate should not exceed 10%. Otherwise, Google will flag your account. For your information, normal CTR should ranges from 0.5% - 10%.

3. Physical Location

Google has good tracing software and technology. They can trace traffics origin down to the small town. So, using different computers with different IP address does not secure anything. So, don't try to click your ads in various internet cafes. That will kill you.

4. Cookies

Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don't forget, Google has set cookies on your computer. They can trace these cookies and see whether they originate from the same computer.

5. Click Pattern 1

It is also suspicious when people click on their clicks and then run away immediately (hit-and-run). But normally, people will surf for a while inside your pages and then click on the ads they want.

6. Click Pattern 2

Why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?

7. Click Pattern 3

And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

8. Other Google Services

Apart from Google Adsense, Google also provide a series of services to us. Don't just think that it is safe if you do not log in your adsense account and click on your ads. What other Google services do they provide to us? Here are some: Gmail (most people are using it), Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, or even Youtube (coz Google has just recently acquired it).

9. Search Engine Ranking

Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? How come people can access your website and click your ads? That will make Google to smell a rat.

10. Webpage design

How about the "Please click a link below" or "donate us by clicking the ads"? These kinds of encouragement are not in line with Google's TOS. Google can use their winning search engine, or even human eyes to check your sites from time to time.

11. Advertisers conversion rate

Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled.

if you are disabled for invalid clicks, what are the chances for google to re-instate your account...if you try to appeal?

thanx

If you have been banned by Google unluckily, you have little chance to reapply for adsense again for the same site with same content inside.

For higher chance, you may choose to grab and write similar but different content from your original one, or even have totally different content for your site, and then reapply again!

I heard that chance will be higher in this case.

thnx Adsense Hut.

so what you're saying is that the issue here are the invalid clicks made on specific site? in other words, you're saying THE SITE IS BANNED and NOT THE OWNER?

that said, if I make a new site with a totally different content, they don't mind that this totally different site is made by a creator who is previously banned?

again, thanks.

yes.....but of course I cannot gurantee you about that, coz I am not a adsense insider.

But I think you should try, with the use of a brand new email address and apply again. btw, I have just recently typed a post about re-applying issue after getting banned. You are recommended to have a look on that.

Also, please kindly leave your email address and subscribe for this blog, in order to keep in touch with my latest adsense news.

What if there is alot of local buzz and people close to where you live/post to your website click on the ads on your website, would you get banned for that even though you never clicked it by yourself?

Physical Location is just only one way....Google will take a holistic look on the combined result. So, that wouldn't make you getting banned.

By the way, you blog looks good! Hope you can subscribe my blog for updated news.

Hello,

i know that showing pages with google ads in Manualsurf or Autosurf
programs is forbidden! So here is my question:
Can i show in Manualsurf and Autosurf program a so called "Filter Page"?
It is page that belongs to the same domain, but it has not any google
ads! This page contains a link to the webpage that contens google ads.
I have made an example, please check it and tell me dues it a google
rules violitation or not!
Example: the webpage http://www.freegames.e-webas.net/freegames.html
has a link to the page with google ads.
http://www.freegames.e-webas.net/
Will such clicks be valid for google or not?
Thanks

Hi there. Thank you very much in leaving a comment in my site.

I think you can do so without any violation of Google's TOS. However, even if it is allowed, I don't think it is a good way to build up traffic to a site.

Please refer to my post of "10 tips on building traffic". There are more free methods to promote your site.

Hope you can subscribe my blog for more updated information.

Hello,
i have one more question!

What should i do when i see that someone make invalid clicks (maybe specially)??
I don't know who, but i think that someone's want to take revenge. For example: today he has clicked 12 times on the same ad! The overall pageCTR(for this page) has grown today to 13,19%.

Thanks for help!

17th January 2007 2:37am
Adsense Hut says...
It is the most troublesome problem to any Adsensers. But are you sure he/she wants to revenge? Because 12 clicks is acceptable to me and a CTR of 13.19% is also reasonable. Since this CTR only last for a day, I suggest you can closely oberve the report and see whether this situation will continue.

If you really want to report it to Google, it is okay to do so. Please visit my post "Reporting invalid / sabotage clicks to Google" for your reference

hey dear ...All the point for the answer to the Question that how google will detect invalid clicking are correct Except no.10
that says hardware address, which is MAC address..it is Localy significant so i dont think that Google can find Hardware or MAC address of ur computer and can detect if the Perticular clicking is from the same computer however, google can definatly very easily find out IPADDRESS of ur computer and location of IPADDRESS.

hi Adsense Hut !
i'm so glad reading ur blog :d
what a very clear explaination.
i have a question bout the banning.
before i read ur blog, i used to click and open my web page by my self.
i can still log on to my adsense account. no flagging message from google adsense admin. but, my earning report in a month is always 0.
i'm afraid if this means that i'm already banned/disabled ???
thnk u 4 ur answer.

good luck.

You used to click and open your webpage? Do you mean you use to click your own ads? If yes, don't do that again! That will cause Google to ban your adsense account.

No matter what, if you can still login your account, that mean your account has not been disabled yet. You mentioned that your earning is always zero. What about the clicks? How many clicks did you recieve?

Look forward for your reply

Hello Adsense Hut,

i think that this question is not only for me very interesting.

In internet exists very much websites with content that google not allows (exmpl: wares, alcohol, drogs....).
Question: can i put links to my website from such verbidden websites?

25th January 2007 2:52am

Pavlidze,

I understand now. If your site is clean from forbidden content, there will be no problem for you to have adsense ads on that page, EVEN if you have links to the forbidden sites.

thank you for your reply. then i will reply back,
about the clicks, actually, it is not earning zero for all the time,
i can realize that i still need more publication/promotion for my site.
My site, as can be seen, is not viewing contents in English only, just partial of those are written in English. What do you think of that ?
Thnk U, and have a nice day.

szpilman,

Thank you very much for your comment. About your site, I think its layout is generally okay. Since I do not know what language it is, it is hard for me to make any comment. For the search box in the center, why don't you change to white in color?

I hope you can kindly put a link to my blog from your site as a little motivation.

Well, I have just tried to search via your google search box and it says you have been banned. It just goes to show that we are all hanging on a very thin thread indeed. Hope it all goes well with you anyway, good luck mate.
